What is Hyperliquid, explained

7 min read · Updated · Crypto

Hyperliquid went from an unknown perpetuals app to the dominant on-chain derivatives venue in about two years, and by 2026 it settles a large share of all DEX perpetual volume - on some measures 40% or more. If you keep seeing HYPE and HyperEVM in your feed, here is what it actually is, in plain terms.

This is an explainer, not financial advice - we do not do price predictions.

What is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a decentralized perpetual-futures exchange that runs on its own purpose-built Layer-1 blockchain. Unlike most DEXs, it uses a fully on-chain central limit order book with gasless order placement and sub-second finality, so trading feels close to a centralized exchange while you keep custody of your funds. It launched in early 2023 and bootstrapped without venture-capital backing. By April 2026 it processed roughly $170B+ in 30-day perp volume with billions in open interest, holding a large share of on-chain perp activity - figures move fast, so verify current numbers.

HYPE and HyperEVM, briefly

HYPE is the native token - used for gas, staking and fee discounts. It launched via a community airdrop in November 2024 with roughly 75% of supply earmarked for users and no VC preallocation. A defining feature is the fee buyback: the protocol uses net trading fees to buy back HYPE, which by 2026 had removed a meaningful chunk of supply. HyperEVM is an Ethereum-compatible smart-contract layer secured by the same consensus, letting apps build on top and interact with the order books; its DeFi ecosystem has grown into the billions in value locked. None of this is a reason to buy - it is just how the system works.

How to spend Hyperliquid profits

Trading on a DEX leaves your profit as USDT or USDC on-chain - which you still need to spend. Bridging to a bank is slow and often taxable. The cleaner route for traders is to keep profits as stablecoins and spend them with a card built for that, straight from the self-custodial wallet you already trade with.
